Help the Philippines Go Coconuts!!!

Micromappers will be having a deployment this weekend to identify areas of coconut palm deforestation in the Philippines. Globally, the Philippines is one of the world’s largest producers of coconut products, however Typhoon Haiyan resulted in devastating biodiversity and tree cover loss. It has been estimated that it could take some regions nearly a decade to recover.

Over 33 million trees were uprooted during the devastating typhoon that hit in November 2013. With so many trees lying around roots up and rotting another challenge has surfaced, the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle. This pest feeds on the palm shoots or hearts of the tree and kills young palms. A dangerous situation when new growth needs to be realized to get farmers back on track. Many tree farmers survive on $1-$2 a day, so the combined effect of a natural disaster and pest infestation are having profound impacts on livelihoods.

What can you do? First, head over to the Micromappers blog to get some more background on the situation and a walk through of the type of exercise this deployment will use. Information on signing up for the activation is provided. This activation will begin Friday December 5th at 12:00pm GMT [London UTC] and run until Sunday December 8th, 2014 at approximately 08:00pm.

Any members seeking more experience using Micromappers, interested in biodiversity and deforestation issues, poverty, reconstruction and environmental health will find this exercise rewarding. We hope to see you there!
